Haas Park (2402 N. Washtenaw Ave.) received a welcome addition this past Thursday as a new state-of-the-art soccer field opened.
The UAE Embassy and Manchester City, through its City Soccer in the Community program, provided the field.
City Soccer in the Community builds quality playing fields and provides coaching and education programs to deserving children in neighborhoods around the country.
Gary Hopkins, board director of City Soccer in the Community, is proud of the accomplishment and what they have been able to provide to the neighborhood. The field was a gift to the community made in partnership with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Embassy in Washington, D.C., the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation and Barclays English Premier League Champions Manchester City.
“We took an old piece of land next door to the field house and turned it into a soccer field,” says Hopkins.
The field sits adjacent to the recreation area and the field house, which opened last year.
The UAE–Manchester City Field was built in partnership with the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation’s “Take the Field” initiative. It was dedicated Thursday night with 1,500 people in attendance.
Mayor Rahm Emanuel; Yousef Al Otaiba, the UAE Ambassador to the United States; Mike Kelly, Chicago Park District Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Bryan Traubert and Penny Pritzker from the Pritzker Traubert Family Foundation; and many local Chicago officials joined hundreds of children to celebrate the opening of the field.
The artificial turf field will be available for kids to play on year-round. Flood lights illuminate the field so neighborhood children will be able to use the field until after dark.
