Fresh air, free popcorn, friends and film. It’s hard to imagine a better way to spend a Saturday night. What could be the highlight of your weekend is happening at Unity Park (2636 N. Kimball Ave) this Saturday, August 17, at sundown: a showing of “The Lorax.”
An environmental fable about a creature that speaks for the trees, The Lorax is a particularly apt movie to screen in Unity Park. This community fixture was rescued from beneath the asphalt of a parking lot twenty years ago and now is an oasis of green for the surrounding community.
The event is sponsored by the Chicago Parks District and organized by the Unity Park Advisory Council (UPAC), run by neighborhood volunteers. Although the event is free, the UPAC will be taking donations. Their budget supports a number of events throughout the year, including Art in the Park and Pumpkinfest. In addition, their efforts have secured numerous upgrades to the park’s playground equipment, including a major renovation scheduled for this fall.
