YMCA of Metro Chicago officials say they have noticed many young adults still are feeling the effects of the Great Recession of 2008, and those struggling to find work or afford higher education often find it difficult to prioritize healthy living.
To address these needs, the facilities will now offer a permanent young adults rate, ages 19-26. Prospective YMCA members in that age bracket can look forward to memberships for $24.99 per month.
“Studies show this age group has been hit hardest by the recession, with long-term consequences to their earning potential and quality of life. The new pricing will help workforce newcomers and college graduates exercise and develop a healthy lifestyle at an affordable price,” McCormick Tribune YMCA Executive Director Stephen Vick says.
Lower Rates For Young Adults
Last year, the YMCA of Greater Boston reduced rates for this age group, and the program’s success inspired the YMCA of Metro Chicago to implement the pilot program, according to Vick. In January, the YMCA of Metro Chicago offered reduced rates at seven Chicago and suburban YMCA centers.
“We received an extremely positive response,” Vick says. “About 545 new adult members between the ages of 19-26 signed up in just one month.”
After such strong results with their pilot program, the YMCA of Metro Chicago decided to implement the new young adult rate system-wide at all 22 membership centers.
“We hope the healthy lifestyles these young adults develop today will also be adopted by future generations. This is just one way to continue the cycle of healthy living that ultimately helps families and our neighborhoods,” he says.
