The hard-to-miss, lime-green painted L’ Patron (2815 W. Diversey Ave.) announced it is expanding its space this month. As customers flock to the venue—often lining up out the door to wait for the venue’s Mexican stables—the news is well timed.
Owners of the small, family-owned Mexican restaurant say the need for expanding the restaurant, which currently consists of a small dining area served by an equally small kitchen, was prompted by the rise in business.
“It got busier,” says co-owner Ernesto Gonzalez. “A lot of people didn’t want to wait. We needed to expand opportunity.”
Gonzalez says L’Patron acquired the empty building next door and began working on the property right away.
With the expansion, patrons can expect more floor space and seating. However, those familiar with the service can expect the short-order style to remain the same.
“It will be the same style. Counter service, customers can grab their food and sit down,” Gonzalez says.
Customers also will see an expanded menu. New desserts items are in the works, and Gonzalez says a rotating special will be added in order to give regulars something new each week.
L’Patron Restaurant Expansion Meets Neighborhood Needs
Gonzalez and his brother, Cesar, opened L’ Patron in 2012 in hopes to bring authentic Mexican food to the north side of Logan Square.
“We wanted our food to be in between gourmet and family dining at an affordable price,” he says.
Owners say they hope the expanded L’Patron will bring even more energy to the neighborhood with its new features.
“We want to contribute to the neighborhood. With the expansion, there will be more action toward [this end of] the neighborhood, more people will want to come around here.”
And what will Gonzalez recommend to patrons when they come by the improved L’ Patron? “The ribeye taco and the fish taco,” he says. “Just based on those two, you’ll want to try more.”
L’ Patron is open while work for the new space occurs next door.
Update: Word on the street is that the new space will open on May 10.
