“Teddy Bear” Football Player Shot And Killed
Mikal Johnson, who recently discovered that he’d made a local semi-professional football team, was shot and killed late last week in Logan Square.
At about 3 a.m. on April 8, Johnson and a friend were exiting their car and walking home in the 2700 block of W. Bloomingdale Ave. when another car pulled up next to them. An attacker allegedly yelled that they’d cut him off, then shot Johnson, 24, in the armpit. The gunman fled, and Johnson was pronounced dead at 4:35 am.
Johnson, of the 1200 Block of W. Belden Ave., studied music at Columbia College but eventually decided to become a history teacher. The Chicago Sun-Times’ Homicide Watch said he was described as a “big teddy bear” and was known for breaking up fights.

According to police, Smith, 25, attacked a 28-year-old male inside a home with an expandable baton. Smith allegedly took the man’s belongings before fleeing the residence.
