Editor’s Note: The original version of this story incorrectly stated that there were two homicides in the neighborhood this week. There was only one. The post below reflects the update.
Three shootings in the neighborhood produced one homicide and three injuries in a bloody week in Logan Square crime. A child was critically injured in one shooting, while three men were shot on Armitage Avenue.
Six-Year-Old Critically Wounded in Evening Shooting
A 6-year-old girl was shot in a front-yard party on the 2100 block of North Bingham Street, in the angled streets north of Armitage and east of California, in one of three headline-grabbing shootings in the neighborhood this week. The shooting happened at 8:10 pm on the evening of June 6.
The girl was taken to Stroger Hospital in the medical district. At last report, she was in critical condition. The shooting was described by Chicago police and by some news outlets as a drive-by, but DNAinfo also cites a witness who saw a group of four men walking off quickly after the shooting.
The shooting took place at a house that residents said was often noisy on an otherwise-quiet block. There was no immediate sign of gang involvement. No other injuries were reported from the shooting, which witnesses said involved as many as nine shots.
‘Documented Gang Member’ Killed Outside Metro PCS on Armitage
A 20-year-old man was killed the evening of June 3 in the 2900 block of West Armitage Avenue, across the street from Parson’s Chicken & Fish. An unknown assailant walked up and fired multiple shots, striking the man in the chest and hitting a 21-year-old bystander in the leg.
The homicide victim was later identified as Daniel Alcantana. The bystander, identified only as Jeffrey in the media, was struck twice in the leg, but his condition was stable.
Police first described both men as “documented gang members” in a statement to the press, but one was in fact an employee of the wireless phone store handing out flyers, DNAinfo reported. For that reason, LoganSquarist presents “documented gang member” in quotations. It’s a term the police department uses to describe victims and perpetrators of violence, but the definition is not readily available.
Second Shooting at Same Location Wounds One
A few days after the above shooting, a man was shot at 3 a.m. in the same block. In the early morning of June 7, the 21-year-old man, who has not been identified, was shot in the 2900 block of West Armitage Avenue. He was wounded in the leg.
The shooter, who was on foot, has not been identified.
One Killed, One Injured in Hit and Run in Avondale
A woman died and a man was seriously injured in a hit-and-run car crash at Belmont and Kedzie the morning of June 5, DNAinfo reported. Police later arrested and charged the alleged driver, Jason Missak of the 5700 block of West Pensacola Avenue, CBS Chicago reports.
Missak was allegedly traveling west on Belmont Avenue and drove through a red light at Kedzie Avenue, right under the 90/94 overpass. He struck a Chevrolet traveling north on Kedzie. One of the passengers in the Chevrolet was killed, while her husband was seriously injured. Other passengers of both vehicles declined treatment.
Missak faces a charge of reckless homicide, as well as two counts of leaving the scene of an accident involving injury or death. Missak was allegedly driving a white Jaguar with the custom license plate DO R DI.
