The Chicago Horror Film Festival in Portage Park is this weekend, and is featuring Logan Square’s own B-movie villain, the Killer Piñata, on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. It is also nominated for “Best Horror Comedy” at the CHFF. Killer Piñata debuted at the Logan Square Theatre this past December, selling out the 150 seat room. It’s returning to the big screen at the Patio Theatre (6008 W. Irving Park Rd.) this Saturday, September 24, just in time for the Halloween season to kick off.
Killer Piñata was filmed entirely in Logan Square. It was funded by a successful Indiegogo campaign in 2014. This past summer, it was released on Amazon, Vimeo and a “Pay what you want” option on their website, www.killerpinata.com with favorable reviews from the horror film industry.
“I’ve been thrilled with the initial reviews. Horror Society and The Big Gay Horror Fan showed that the genre community really understood what we were trying to accomplish with Killer Piñata,” said writer and director, Stephen Tramontana.
The movie’s producer, Jenn Kunkel, is a longtime resident of the neighborhood. She has described the movie in the past as a “love letter to Logan Square.”
“It’s been very exciting to get the movie out there, so everyone can share in the fun of KP. As as Logan Square resident myself, it’s also been great to know that the local businesses are now able to see how their generosity paid off and how appreciative we are of their support,” says Kunkel.
The 2016 Chicago Horror Film Festival runs from Sept. 23-25 and features three days of over 60 horror films, craft vendors and special guests like Gothic Illusionist Ron Fitzgerald, artist Geo Alderson and comic book writer, Charles D. Moisant.
Presale tickets are now sold out, but you are able to get one day passes at the door for $20.
