As the fate of the embattled Double Door music venue in Wicker Park continues to hang in the balance, its owners are proposing a new concert venue in Logan Square.
According to a report on the Logan Square Preservation group’s website, the venue would be at the historic Logan Square State and Savings Bank, 2551 N. Milwaukee Ave., and would accommodate 650 people plus two bar areas with capacities of 229 and 120 people.
It is not clear if the new venue, which like Double Door has a second entrance, 3061 W. Logan Blvd., would be the future home of Double Door, despite reports already surfacing suggesting so. Attempts to reach Double Door owners, Joe Shanahan and Sean Mulroney, were not successful Friday. The duo also owns Metro in Lakeview.
The proposal also names Jonathan Splitt Architects as the design minds behind the new venue, which would be just southwest of Trike and New Wave Coffee. Attempts to also reach a spokesman for the firm were unsuccessful Friday.
The proposed location, once a bank and then a medical facility, is now owned by Adam Saffro, with New Era Chicago, and Michael Hagenson. LoganSquarist left a message for Saffro, but reached Hagenson by phone; he said he could not comment on it, but has other projects in the works in Logan Square. LoganSquarist will follow up with Saffro and Hagenson for more on the additional area plans.
Additionally, the preservation group details that the proposal would need to follow landmark guidelines as the Corinthian-columned limestone building is a recognized landmark in the area.
The preservation group also notes the current building’s zoning is a B3-3, which means a restaurant, open patio, food and beverage sales and liquor sales, entertainment and spectator sports both medium and large capacity, are permitted on the property. So far, no request for zoning change is anticipated, but a 2 a.m. liquor license has been requested, the preservation group noted.
While this is only the beginning, the venue wouldn’t be open until late 2017.
LoganSquarist will continue to follow up and keep you informed on the latest as it comes in.
