As midnight approaches on January 31, the “Dry January” crowd will undoubtedly be looking forward to a beer or cocktail to welcome a “Wet February.” Regardless of whether you took part in the no-alcohol challenge or not, who doesn’t love an excuse to unwind with a couple of drinks? Check out these Logan Square breweries and distilleries where you can support local businesses, all while your blood alcohol level rises:
Chicago Distilling Company
(2359 N. Milwaukee Ave.)
A family owned distillery, this hot spot was founded in 2010 and is still running as strong as the spirits. Options available here are gin, vodka and whiskey. Using family recipes and techniques, distilling occurs in small batches to ensure the best flavors and highest quality possible, every time. Classic cocktails include old fashioneds, gimlets, whiskey sours and more. And for those who like to add a bit of knowledge to their drinking, the distillery offers regular tours so you can learn about the process from grain to bottle.
Hopewell Brewing
(2760 N. Milwaukee Ave.)
This dog, baby and people friendly taproom is a hop, skip, and jump away from the Logan Square CTA stop. Hopewell is owned by husband and wife duo Stephen Bossu and Samantha Lee, as well as partner Jonathon Fritz who all share a passion for unpretentious, good beer. From Red IPAs to hoppy Sours, there’s something here for even the most discerning of tongues.
Maplewood Brewery & Distillery
(2717 N. Maplewood Ave.)
Maplewood was started by two home brewers/distillers who decided it was about time they shared their glorious libations with the world. The owners aim to bridge the gap between the craft beer and spirit worlds. Luckily for us, a taproom is coming soon, so keep an eye on their website. In the meantime, bottled beer is available.
Off Color Brewing
(3925 W. Dickens Ave.)
There’s no taproom or bar at Off Color Brewing, but don’t let that stop you from buying their delicious beers at their Dickens Avenue shop. In their own words via their website, their bottle shop is “small. It’s industrial. It’s gonna be freezing in the winter and boiling in the summer, so be glad there’s no bar or tasting room for you to sweat/freeze your butt off. But hey, fresh beer and special bottle releases and tours are now yours. You’re welcome.” So there you have it — enough said.
Pipeworks Brewing
(3912 W. McLean Ave.)
Brewers of the famous and fantastically-named Ninja vs. Unicorn Imperial IPA, Pipeworks is one craft brewery you have to try. Consumption on the premises is not allowed (pretty hard to do without a bar or taproom), but there is a to-go gift shop for merchandise and packaged beer. Check them out for creative beers and bold artwork.
Revolution Brewing
(2323 N. Milwaukee Ave.)
If you like a little hustle and bustle at your breweries, then Revolution is the place to be. This is a neighborhood institution where friends and families congregate to enjoy some of the freshest beer in town. Between their brewery and brewpub, they produce dozens of different beer styles every year, including IPAs, porters, pilsners, Belgian-style ales and pale ales. But we’re sure this isn’t news to you — Revolution is a Logan Square staple, so this is more of a reminder than anything.
