It looks like it isn’t just the bar scene that’s exploding in Logan Square — coffee is quickly becoming a significant part of the landscape. Joining the ranks of Gaslight, Damn Fine Coffee, Passion House, Intelligentsia, Caffé Umbria and the recently opened Halfwit, is Milwaukee-based Colectivo (2293 N. Milwaukee Ave.). Before the grand opening on Wednesday, Dec. 20, LoganSquarist was invited to preview the space, which is situated in the south building of the MiCA development.
Brookes May, a representative with Colectivo, said the new cafe will feature an outdoor patio with a fire pit, garage doors that will open in the summer months and plenty of seating. The space highlights colorful, funky decor and features industrial-sized mixing bowls from Colectivo’s first bakery that have been repurposed into planters.
Yes, bakery. The coffee shop is outfitted with an extensive selection of made-from-scratch baked goods that are brought in daily from Troubador Bakery in Milwaukee, including scones, cakes, croissants, danishes, muffins, cookies, bagels and cinnamon buns. For those looking for something a little heartier, the cafe will offer breakfast and lunch sandwiches, May said.
As touted on their website, Colectivo proudly hand-roasts all of their beans and is known for its “Session Coffees,” named for their ability to deliver a pleasant drinking experience from the first, hot sip to the last, cold one. Patrons can expect all of the coffee shop favorites such as espresso drinks, brewed coffee, pour overs and teas. And keeping in the spirit of fun holiday drinks, the cafe is featuring a mint matcha latte.
May said that Colectivo has also collaborated with 3 Sheeps Brewing of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, to create a variety of beers to be served in their cafes. The Logan Square shop will feature a handful of taps and will be available daily after 11 a.m.
Colectivo began in 1993 in Milwaukee, where it maintains sixteen cafes across Milwaukee and Madison. The company made its Chicago debut earlier this year in Lincoln Park.
