Target announced this morning they will be joining the former mega mall redevelopment space (2434 N. Sacramento Ave.) at the southwest corner of Milwaukee Avenue and Sacramento Avenue. It will be a small-store format like the one opening in Wicker Park in 2018 and marks the company’s 10th small-store type in Chicago, according to the press release. After XSport Fitness dropped out of the project last summer, developers have been hush about who would take its place.
This will be the second Target in the neighborhood—close to the large store on Logan Boulevard—and add a commercialized grocery store to the central Logan location, which has gotten more congested over the years and is seeing rapid development changes.
“Target’s small-format stores have received a warm reception from our Chicagoland guests, and we look forward to providing a one-stop shopping experience in Logan Square,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target. “With a range of products across food, toys, kids and baby apparel and everyday essentials, this store’s assortment and overall experience is designed especially for Logan Square’s growing and diverse population.”
The small-style store chain will have a small selection or normal Target products like basic apparel, kids’ toys, some home products and essentials. School and office supplies, as well as “a robust grocery selection including healthy food options for both the fill-in or stock-up trip” and a CVS and online prescription orders will squeeze in there, per the press release.
The store will hire about 50 new team members and boasts its competitive minimum wage. On March 6, Target raised its minimum wage to $12 and plan to make it $15 by 2020, when the small store will be completed.
“We welcome the Target store and new jobs to the Logan Square community. Target has been a long-time sponsor of neighborhood activities, and we are happy to have Target continue as a partner of community building efforts in the neighborhood,” said Alderman Scott Waguespack of the 32nd Ward.
The redevelopment was recently revived by developer Terraco, Inc. It will deliver 240 rental apartments, over 112,000 square feet of commercial space (Target will occupy 27,400 square feet, which leaves room for another retailer), 313 vehicle parking spaces and parking for 125 bicycles, according to a Feb. 26 Streetsblog Chicago article.
