What’s your role with LoganSquarist?
I am a writer in the food and drink beat primarily but open to covering just about anything that piques my interest.
Where are you from originally?
I actually grew up in Gaithersburg, Maryland, just about 25 miles north of Washington, D.C. I chose to move out here for grad school in 2014 and am amazed at all of the connections to Maryland I have found so far from home!
When did you join?
July 2017—coming up on my one-year anniversary this summer!
Do you write professionally?
I do not write professionally so this is my first foray into journalistic writing. My day job as a mental health therapist overlaps in terms of skills but the writing part is just a bit different.
What made you interested in volunteering for LoganSquarist?
After moving to the neighborhood in 2016, I wanted to get to know the people, places, and events going on in Logan Square more deeply. I thought that by joining this organization, I would have the opportunity to explore this rich neighborhood and share my interests with others.
What is your favorite LoganSquarist story you worked on?
I would have to say my interview with the folks at The Little Pickle was a highlight for sure. Between the vegetarian mock meat sandwich and pickle flight, I was in heaven with the food alone—not to mention, Bradley and Lindsay were a delight to chat with on a Saturday afternoon.
What is your favorite restaurant or hang out in Logan Square?
Oh man, what a tough question. The Boiler Room is a spot I fell in love with pretty soon after moving to Chicago because of their Jameson soft serve ice cream. The Whistler for live music any day of the week and a strong cocktail is a must. Hmm.. and Best Intentions for its consistently good vibes and amazing patio.
What’s your favorite thing to do in the neighborhood?
I really love going to the Logan Square farmer’s market in the summertime, picking up some cheese and fruit, and picnicking in the sunshine—not to mention all of the dog watching that you can do at the market!
What has been the best part about joining the team?
It has been really fun getting to know other people in the neighborhood and sharing their perspectives and experiences working with LoganSquarist.
What have you learned from working with LoganSquarist?
LoganSquarist has taught me to be more confident in my perspective and writing ability, even though I am not a professional journalist. It’s all about connecting to the neighborhood and through writing, [it] helps others connect with all that Logan Square has to offer.
