You might have noticed a new vibrant storefront with large neon pink letters in the former Small Fry space. It’s the new Cafe Tola, bringing empanada heaven to the neighborhood, where the owners live. While Cafe Tola (2489 N. Milwaukee Ave.) has been an empanada institution in Chicago (other locations are in Avondale and Lakeview), Logan Square marks the businesses’ fourth location.
Cafe Tola Logan Square joins 90 Miles as a go-to spot for empanadas in the community. Having both on different corners of the neighborhood will make getting that empanada fix even easier and more common; they fit perfectly into the neighborhood’s huge food scene.
Victoria and Gerardo Salamanca opened their third Cafe Tola location in Logan Square this past November. They are also planning on opening their next location in River North this January. The Chicago empanada staple has a daily rotating empanada selection with fillings ranging from spinach and cheese to chicken mole at $4 per empanada.
In addition to their vast empanada selection, they have burritos, tacos, and tortas. Breakfast tacos ($4.50-4.75 for two large tacos) are served all day in case you’re a late riser, with a vegetarian option for each category. If you want to bring more pizazz to your taco, they also have a “taco bar” where you can add some pico, salsa, stewed jalapeño peppers, etc. Pair your breakfast taco with a sweet and comforting Horchata or Matcha lemonade as they have quite the array of refreshing beverages.
Maybe you need a last minute item for your home-cooked dinner? Cafe Tola also has grocery staples such as hot sauce, refried beans, Chipotle peppers, corn and many more options. They also have Rishi Chai to make at home in case you have a Chai craving. The storefront has communal and window seating depending on how social you are feeling. Enjoy their colorful and playful mural while chomping on your favorite empanada.
Cafe Tola Logan Square Hours: Sunday-Thursday from 7am-9pm and Fridays/Saturdays from 7am-9pm.
