While Logan Square has been currently gentrifying—some may say that it is already gentrified—the community is not willing to say goodbye to long-time businesses such as Marcello’s, a Father and Son Restaurant (2475 N. Milwaukee Ave) better known as Father and Son. Father and Son has been a Logan Square institution for 72 years known for its satisfying and crave-worthy thin crust and deep dish pizza.
Father and Son initially closed their restaurant on July 14 due to the rising property values and high costs associated with maintaining an older building. However, they decided to reopen for delivery and pick-up Wednesday through Sunday with a more limited menu, featuring their “best, classic recipes,” according to Billy Bauer, president of the business.
“We received so much overwhelming feedback from our customers, employees and friends, wishing that we would stay open as long as we can,” Bauer said.

While businesses are facing challenges with affordability in Logan Square, Bauer feels neutral about the process of gentrification.
“It is a natural progression that happens to cities all over the country when the community is strong. There are many positives and negatives that happen with gentrification,” he said.
Bauer is optimistic about these recent changes at Father and Son even though it has been a difficult process.
“We loved being in Logan Square and [Father and Son] has been part of my family my whole life, but I’m also looking forward to the changes we’re making to our catering and wholesale business,” Bauer said. “We hope to further grow in these areas and to never stop serving the Logan Square community.”
Clearly, the community is close to the businesses’ heart given how Father and Son has been a part of the neighborhood for 75 years and the news has received widespread attention on social media and on the street.
So, next time you’re in the mood for some hearty Italian food, go out and try some Chicago tavern-style pizza (crispy and square-shaped with a thin crust) and support a family business that values the Logan Square community. Bauer and his family are extremely appreciative of the locals.
“We would like to express how grateful we are to be able to have a family business in such an amazing community,” he said. “We want to thank everyone that has supported us over the years in the community.”
