LoganSquarist wouldn’t be possible without the hard-working efforts of our dedicated staff. Hailing from all across the country, with a number of interests and professional aspirations, our team has one thing in common: a passion for Logan Square. Discover the people behind the scenes that bring you articles, events and more in our LoganSquarist Staff Highlight column.
What’s your role with LoganSquarist?
I am a staff photographer.
What have you been working on recently?
My last assignment was to document the campaign kick-off for State Rep. Will Guzzardi. See my photos and the article here!
Where are you from originally?
I was born in Berwyn, IL but grew up in LaGrange.
When did you join LoganSquarist?
April 2019.
Are you a photographer professionally?
I am now retired but previously worked as cameraman for the CBS News news magazine “60 Minutes.”
What made you interested in volunteering for LoganSquarist?
I feel that being a volunteer for LoganSquarist has become an end in itself. I love the stories I’ve been asked to work on and strongly believe that hyperlocal journalism is important.
At first, I thought it would be a good way to hone my skills as a still photographer. Now, six months later, I feel that being a volunteer for LoganSquarist has become an end in itself. I love the stories I’ve been asked to work on and strongly believe that hyperlocal journalism is important.
What is your favorite LoganSquarist story you worked on?
Unquestionably, my favorite story so far involved Envision Unlimited, a local nonprofit dedicated to improving the likes of individuals with disabilities. It’s been a long time since an assignment brought me to the verge of tears.
What is your favorite restaurant or hang out in Logan Square?
I will always be especially fond of Lula Café because that’s how we were introduced to the neighborhood. But I also love Fat Rice, Dante’s Pizza and Small Bar (technically in Avondale).
What’s your favorite thing to do in the neighborhood?
My wife and I love nothing more than walking to Logan Theater to see a film. The theater is so retro and so is the experience. If the movie is good, the walk home can seem surreal.
What has been the best part about joining the team?
It was a tad intimidating for a sexagenarian like myself to join a coterie of young, ambitious people. But I was immediately drawn in by their dedication, enthusiasm, and goodwill. Despite my age, the kind souls of LSQ made me feel welcome and accepted, and for that, I am grateful.
Bonus question: What music do you listen to?
I’m so glad you asked! (You didn’t, haha). I am a big fan of indie artists like Kevin Morby, Amen Dunes, and Ty Segall. Recently, I’ve been infatuated with the wistful, folk-influenced music of Joan Shelley, Weyes Blood, and Cate Le Bon. I also love jazz. Kamasi Washington makes my head explode.
Be sure to check out Tom’s photos in our articles and on social media, and say hi if you see him around the neighborhood with (or without) a big camera!

I was in art class with Tom my freshman year at LT. He was a sophomore. He was such a nice guy. I knew he’d be famous one day!
