October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month and restaurants across Chicago have teamed up with Connections for Abused Women and Their Children (CAWC) to collect supplies and raise money to increase the number of shelter beds for survivors.
According to CAWC, there are nearly 3 million people in Chicago and only 150 shelter beds available. Many people remain in violent, abusive relationships because they have nowhere else to go.
Daniella Caruso, of West Town’s Funkenhausen, organized the #nowservingawareness campaign to advocate CAWC’s mission. This initiative, she says, is about awareness and education. Caruso recruited local bars and restaurants to help support the cause by using their vast social media platforms to promote #nowservingawareness, acting as a donation site for supplies, or donating proceeds from food or drink specials to CAWC.
Many of your favorite Logan Square establishments are participating, like these:
Mi Tocaya Antojería (2800 W. Logan Blvd.) is using their social media platform to promote the #nowservingawareness campaign as well as handing out information in the restaurant about how to help and get involved.
Spilt Milk Tavern (2758 W. Fullerton Ave.) is contributing $1 from each Logan Island sold during October as well as serving as a drop off location for supply donations.
Landbirds (2532 N. California Ave.) is similarly using their Instagram page to promote awareness. They are also accepting donations to CAWC and plan to make a donation of their own to the organization.
Maplewood (2717 N. Maplewood Ave.) is also using their social media platforms to highlight the #nowservingawarness campaign, acting as a drop off location for supply donations, and will have printed materials regarding the program on hand.
Land & Sea Dept.’s Lonesome Rose (2101 N. California Ave.), Longman & Eagle (2657 N. Kedzie Ave.), and Lost Lake (3154 W. Diversey Ave.) are serving as a drop off locations for supply donations. Longman and Eagle and Lonesome Rose also have collateral available detailing how guests can support the cause.
Other Logan Square restaurants participating are Parson’s Chicken & Fish (2952 W. Armitage Ave.), Young American (2545 N. Kedzie Ave.) and Table, Donkey & Stick (2728 W. Armitage Ave.).
