Tokyo we’re not. But Logan Square puts on an impressive light show of its own when the sun goes down.
From the queasy yellow-gold of the street lamps filtering down through the trees lining the boulevard to the chiaroscuro of the side streets to the vivid “Blade Runner” neons of the storefront signs, the muted daytime tones of the square take on a whole new intensity after dark. This palette shifts with the weather and the seasons … glittering ice crystals refract the light in the winter; after a summer rain, the slick streets are painted in a flickering patchwork of reflected color.
Waves of headlights alternate, brightening the composition as they approach and darkening it as they recede. The shadows of revelers add dimension during the early hours of the night, and as the crowds thin by the early morning, an eerie stillness takes over. This is my favorite time to explore. The bewitched atmosphere is largely devoid of human distraction, and I have the illusory but powerful sense that for a brief moment, the scene is mine alone.
Below are some of my favorite neighborhood night captures, ranging from grainy cellphone shots to more-formal snaps taken with my Nikon.
