Celebrate International Women’s Day with all of your favorite things: babes, booze and a bake sale.
Swing by Superkhana International (3059 W. Diversey Ave.) on March 8 to support some of Chicago’s best pastry chefs and bartenders as they serve up some tasty treats and delicious drinks.
The lineup is a veritable who’s who of Chicago’s formidable service industry and includes some of Logan Square’s favorite pastry chefs: Emily Spurlin (Lula Cafe), Erin Koroll (Cellar Door Provisions), and Mai Giffard (Bang Bang Pie & Biscuits).
Ursula Siker, chef and owner of Jeff & Judes, organized the bake sale to honor the camaraderie and support she found amongst womxn (a term that includes feminine-identifying genderqueer and non-binary individuals) in the service industry.
“Coming up in food and bartending, we are taught that any competition should be viewed as a threat—particularly other womxn—because there is only room for so many of us in this industry, Siker said. “It takes a lot of unlearning to see, appreciate, and celebrate the talents of others in your field; to understand that we all become better when we share our knowledge with each other. What better way than to surround yourself with some of the womxn you admire most and raise money for policy reform in the field?”
Proceeds from the event will go to Restaurant Culture Association, a nonprofit working to combat sexual harassment and build safe working environments in the food and drink industry “by creating space to discuss restaurant culture and promote creative policy solutions.”
In support of RCA’s mission, Siker said it’s about creating a culture that works to combat the source of sexual harassment by identifying learned behavior and assessing what it means to be an ally.
“By raising money for this new nonprofit, we hope to begin seeing the change that their work can bring to the industry,” she said.
The bake sale runs from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. and with tickets at $5. Each participant will have their own station where guests can purchase baked goods (1-2 tickets) and cocktails (2-3 tickets). And while you’re noshing and sipping, don’t forget to stop by RCA’s booth to learn more about their work.
