Voters of Logan Square, your polling place for today’s primary election may have changed!
Some polling sites in the neighborhood appear to have closed amid coronavirus concerns. But you can find your new polling site via several resources — and use of early voting sites has been extended through today.
To check your current polling site, you can visit the Chicago Board of Elections page here — though be forewarned that the search timed out for me when tried it this morning. The Illinois State Board of Elections site worked better for me and confirmed that my polling site had indeed changed.
You can also call in to the city board’s “Election Central” hotline at 312-269-7870, until 8 p.m. today. I called at about 9:30 this morning and was on hold only briefly before a friendly woman let me know my new site and that early voting sites had been extended. The board’s main contact number (312-269-7900) was busy when I called it.
If you are unable to find that information (or the sites are down or numbers are busy), don’t worry: You can still use an early voting location. Find the full list of early voting sites here. Our voting guide for the primaries listed some of the closest early voting spots to Logan Square:
- Ward 32 Bucktown-Wicker Park Library 1701 N. Milwaukee Ave.
- Ward 35 NEIU El Centro 3390 N. Avondale Ave.
- Ward 26 Humboldt Park Library 1605 N. Troy St.
- Ward 1 Goldblatt’s Building 1615 W. Chicago Ave.
- Ward 33 McFetridge Sports Center 3843 N. California Ave.
- Ward 31 Portage Cragin Library 5108 W. Belmont Ave.
The Chicago Board of Elections early voting website says, “For the March 17 Primary Election, Chicago voters may use any Early Voting & Registration location in the city from March 2 through Election Day on March 17.” The person I spoke to at the Election Central hotline confirmed that early voting sites had been extended through today.
Comments started coming in to the Logan Square Community Page on Facebook last night that some polling sites had been closed. I confirmed personally, via both elections sites and by calling the Chicago Board of Elections, that my site has changed. One voter said that the Diversey Square Apartments at 3305 W. Diversey Ave., polling site for the 35th Ward, Precinct 17, had closed. At the Chicago Board site, that poster found that his new site was at NEIU (Northeastern Illinois University).
Another poster noted that the polling site at 3600 W. Fullerton Ave. had put up a sign saying the site was closed “due to coronavirus.” You can find a full list of polling sites here.
Personally, I can confirm that my original polling site — for Ward 35, Precinct 25 — of the Logan Square Apartments at 2600 N. Kedzie Ave. has changed. Both ward websites and the Election Central operator informed me that my voting site today is now NEIU El Centro, at 3390 N. Avondale Ave.
Of course, if I hadn’t already voted early, I could just go to the Wicker Park-Bucktown Library early voting site today. Good luck out there, voters! And please let us know if you see any more information about closed polling sites.
As for voting during this time of “social distancing,” the Chicago board site says, “URGENT NOTICE: WHERE LINES ARE FORMING, PLEASE PRACTICE SOCIAL DISTANCING WITH 6 FEET (2 METERS) OF SPACE BETWEEN PERSON IN FRONT OF AND BEHIND YOU.“
