Almost 10 years ago, I launched this scrappy little idea of socializing the neighborhood. What’s evolved and blossomed over a decade is an all-volunteer organization dedicated to the dissemination of news and stories that connect Logan Square neighbors and businesses.
Local news in the area has evolved greatly over the past decade. When I first moved to Logan Square, community news coverage was bleak, to say the least. News outlets of the day — Chicagoist, Chicago Tribune and the like — barely recognized Logan Square apart from nearby neighborhoods or distinct from the polarizing coverage of crime and violence splashing across their chosen headlines.
Fast forward to when DNAinfo folded, the neighborhood questioned how to keep local journalism alive and worried about how the lack of news would impact our community. During it all, LoganSquarist has covered Logan Square: with neighbors telling neighbors’ stories, sharing news and information, and hosting events that bring us together.
Now more than ever, hyperlocal news is critical. As many of us continue to social distance, perhaps working from home and limiting interactions with neighbors, family and friends, it’s never felt more important to maintain tangible connections with the world around us.
As a volunteer-run publication, we need your help to keep doing what we do. Through the support of our first Virtual Fundraiser, starting today through Friday, we’re asking everyone to help us reach our goal of $300 per month in Patron support. Every little bit helps supplement our costs and aid us through the coming year. Will you #SupportLocalNews?
Whether you make a one-time donation or become a patron on Patreon, every contribution is a mighty one. 💪
Virtual Fundraiser Perks
To kick off our Virtual Fundraiser, we’re awarding patrons who pledge $10 or more a month during the fundraiser week with a socially distanced, hand-delivered exclusive “I Am a LoganSquarist” face mask, printed by Pride Masks (delivery within the 60647 zip code and while supplies last).
Additionally, all patrons will be entered to win a six-bottle, two-hour, in-home wine tasting for 14-20 people, compliments of Wines For Humanity. Winners will be announced Saturday, Sep. 19.
