The Whistler is releasing new music every Monday. “The Weekly Free” is a new song or collection of songs that were recorded live on The Whistler’s stage.
“Most of the artists we feature are Chicago musicians because most of the people who perform here are locals,” said Billy Helmkamp, co-owner of The Whistler. They’ve had some touring bands record with them and hope to have more in the future, Helmkamp added. From jazz to punk to electronic music, all different types of bands and artists have graced The Whistler’s stage.
“The Weekly Free” has been growing for about five years, he said, when Helmkamp’s team began recording select shows at The Whistler. “It’s been a major passion project for us because Rob [Brenner] and I are so driven by music,” said Helmkamp said about the other co-owner. “Live music is why we opened The Whistler in the first place.”
They have been releasing LPs and CDs under the Whistler banner since 2007, and all of their releases have been recorded on the Whistler stage and are available for free streaming or download. For downloads, there is a “name your price” option. With their agreement to the musicians, 100 percent of the profits from these downloads goes straight to the musician.
