Tabula Rasa was founded in February of 2009 after a teacher, Chelsea Armstrong, got sick and tired of witnessing her brilliant and incarcerated students leave jail and quickly find their way back. In the controlled environment of her CPS classroom within the confines of the Cook County Department of Corrections her students were able to reflect on their past choices, set realistic goals and develop passion for, not only learning, but for living a life of freedom.
When incarcerated students return to society their immature hearts are thrown into a world of temptation, peer pressure, insecurity and violence. It is unrealistic to expect these young men, many with criminal records, to enroll themselves in school, locate appropriate therapeutic services and secure employment, all while avoiding their former best friends, without a support system.
Tabula Rasa is the support these kids need. We offer a holistic approach to rehabilitation which we are fully confident will combat the epidemic of serial incarceration that is haunting our city.
